Sunshine Swallers tried her first case the Monday after my Houston Press article came out and it happened to be a DWI. She asked the jury if anybody had read the Houston Press article and they had not. She got a not guilty verdict. She was very happy. She said it was the second best day in her life, the first being the birth of her son. Two days later, Jim Medley also tried a DWI and asked the jury if anybody had read the Houston Press article. They had not. Jim got a quick not guilty verdict. I suppose my article hasn’t tainted the entire jury pool in Harris County and it didn’t really make things harder for our clients after all!

I read the article and didn’t think it was so terrible. Some of the quotes made me, as a lawyer, cringe a little, but I understand that when you are speaking to a reporter you may not realize, at the time, that what you are saying, may look bad in print or be taken out of context. Most lawyers think this type of self-promotion damages the reputation of our profession. I believe the opposite to be true. By virtue of our complete lack of public self-promotion, we, as a profession, have allowed those who criticize lawyers and the legal system to dominate the public discourse and define who we are and what we do.
