The majority of Bexar County consists of the San Antonio metropolitan area. The county has a total area of 1,257 square miles and a population of approximately 1.4 million people. Located in South-Central Texas, located approximately 190 miles west of Houston and 140 north of the Gulf of Mexico. Part of Bexar county's northern edge is part of what is considered Texas Hill County.

The San Antonio River comes from springs north of the city and flows southward through the county. The San Antonio & New Braunfels metropolitan area is the 28th largest of metropolitan areas in the U.S.
